Call for mural artists for Meet the Street arts and culture festival

(Red Deer, Alberta)

The City of Red Deer is seeking visual artists to create vibrant, outdoor murals as part of a new arts and culture festival taking place in September.

The creation of up to 10 downtown alley murals will precede a three-day festival and kickoff the month long celebration of Alberta Culture Days in Red Deer. The murals will enhance the vibrancy of the city’s downtown spaces, contribute to the creation of community landmarks that foster civic pride and provide an inspiring backdrop to future outdoor events in the downtown core.

“The goal of Meet the Street is an activation of underused downtown spaces through music, visual art, performances and meaningful partnerships,” said Bobby-Jo Stannard, Community Development Superintendent. “We look forward to inviting the community to explore the new murals and experience all the festival features in a new downtown event space. We don’t yet know what events will look like later this year, but we are working towards a plan to ensure Red Deerians can participate, either in person, virtually, or a combination.”

Artists and artist collectives representing a variety of styles, disciplines and cultural backgrounds are invited to apply. Consideration will be given to artists based in central Alberta.

The deadline for applications is Monday, February 15 at 11:59 p.m. Selected artists/collectives will be invited to design an outdoor mural for one of 10 downtown, back-alley locations.

More information and an online submission form are available at www.reddeer.ca/MeetTheStreet.
