Safe Harbour Society, the organization who operates the temporary emergency shelter located in the Cannery Row building, has submitted an application to extend operations until the permanent shelter is operational, or at a minimum for an additional year (until September 30, 2022).

Currently, the temporary shelter location is permitted to operate at its current location until September 30, 2021. This extension was approved by Council on May 26, 2021 through the following items:

  • Land Use Bylaw extension with an amendment
  • Development Permit
  • Business License conditions

The application will go through the standard rezoning process, which includes first reading during a regular Council meeting followed by a Public Hearing and second and third hearing at a Council meeting at least four weeks later. The meetings will be in the next two months and specific dates will be advertised once determined. As part of the Public Hearing, property owners within 100 metres of the temporary shelter site (5239 53 Avenue) will be contacted by letter to give them an opportunity to provide feedback for Council’s consideration.
