Earlier this year, the 2020 Mayor’s Recognition Awards were presented virtually to over 40 individuals and teams, including two Mayor’s Special Awards.

The Mayor’s Special Award is given to an individual or team who demonstrates exceptional achievement and has significantly enhanced Red Deer’s profile and the quality of life for our residents. A Mayor’s Special Award was presented to the 5,000 volunteers who made the 2019 Canada Winter Games the massive success it was and continues to be.

The City was unable to present a personal award to each and every one of the 5,000 Red Deerians who gave their time to ensure the success of this event, however, Patricia Martens was chosen to represent the more than 5,000 volunteers and accepted the award from Mayor Veer during the virtual event.

Not wanting to miss the opportunity to thank each and every one of these 5,000 volunteers for their hard work and dedication, starting tomorrow, Friday, October 22, the Mayor’s Special Award will be on display at the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame for viewing, photographs and opportunities for every volunteer to have their moment.

The display will be available for viewing until January 19, 2022. The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame is located at #102 - 4200 Highway 2. Visit for hours of operation.

The Mayor’s Recognition Awards recognize individuals, groups or teams who have brought honour and recognition to Red Deer in one of five categories. Award recipients are chosen by the Mayor’s Recognition Awards Selection Committee, with the exception of the Mayor’s Special Award recipient, which is selected by the Mayor.

Visit to view all of our 2020 award recipients, hear and read their heartwarming stories and learn why they were selected as award recipients.
