Red Deer, Alta. – On Mar. 12, Red Deer RCMP conducted speed enforcement via stationary laser on Ross Street, near 46 Ave.
During the operation, at approximately 1:30 p.m. police observed a vehicle travelling at 102 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. The vehicle was stopped and the driver was identified as a 34 year old male from Red Deer. Due to the extreme speed and the risk posed to the public, the driver was summoned to court to appear before a Judge.
After receiving the summons, the driver returned to the roadside with a sign protesting the charge. As a result, three vehicles nearly collided, and the individual was directed to stop. When he persisted in his actions, he was charged with Sec 115(2)(e) of the TSA: Engaging in a stunt that is likely to distract, startle or interfere with users of the roadway, which is a $567 fine.
“Citizens making the decision to travel at such extreme speeds pose a serious risk the public,” says Sergeant Mike Zufferli with the Red Deer RCMP Traffic Unit. “These extreme speeds show a wanton disregard for the safety of others, and was exacerbated by this driver’s actions where, in the middle of the day, in a heavily populated downtown core, chose to dangerously distract others. We will continue to work tirelessly to address this behavior through enforcement and education.”
Automated Traffic Enforcement operates in areas where speeding has been identified as a community concern, where there is a documented history of collisions, and/or in areas where conventional enforcement is ineffective or unsafe. These tools, along with conventional traffic enforcement and education campaigns, help make Red Deer’s roads safer.
