Red Deer Emergency Services (RDES) responded to a residential fire which destroyed two homes in Kentwood Sunday morning.

RDES arrived on scene shortly after 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 27 and found an exterior fire had started on the porch of one home and quickly spread to the other. Quick response by fire suppression crews helped to ensure the fire did not spread any further.

After an investigation, RDES has determined the probable cause of the fire to be an improperly discarded cigarette. Total damage to the two homes is estimated to be more than $700,000.

Both families were home when the fire occurred and everyone evacuated safely with the notification from smoke alarms and witnesses that went door to door.

RDES would like to take this opportunity to remind residents of important fire safety tips to prevent fires at home:

  • Always dispose of cigarettes in proper containers. Use a deep, sturdy ashtray, not plant pots or other vegetation which can easily catch fire.
  • Watch what you heat: unattended cooking is one of the leading causes of home fires.
  • Working smoke alarms save lives: check your smoke alarms today.
