With Red Deer nearing its highest number of COVID-19 cases since the pandemic was originally declared in March 2020, The City of Red Deer is reminding citizens to protect themselves and others by following provincial health guidelines and restrictions.
Sitting at 544 active cases today, there are currently outbreaks at several local businesses, schools, and most recently, shelter-related sites in Red Deer.
“The rate of infection in our community and region over the past week is of significant concern. We need to do everything we can to reduce the spread by following public health guidelines,” said Mayor Tara Veer. “Vaccines offer long-term hope of resuming something closer to normal life in the months ahead; but right now, we are still experiencing increased numbers across our city and province and we need to elevate our local efforts to minimize community spread.”
The Province of Alberta continues to roll out its vaccination program with a Rapid Flow Through Vaccine Clinic at Westerner Park in Red Deer. In addition, they are working closely with municipalities to respond to community outbreaks as they occur.
“In many cases, there are worksites, businesses and essential services that must continue to operate in our community amidst the pandemic,” said City Manager Allan Seabrooke. “In these circumstances, The City of Red Deer is doing everything it can to support businesses and organizations who may be at a higher risk of transmission. In the case of our vulnerable sector, we have community social service providers who are doing extraordinary work to protect some of our city’s most vulnerable and minimize further spread in Red Deer. This work is imperative as we continue to see rising numbers in our city.”
The City of Red Deer continues to work with the Province of Alberta and local service providers to ensure adequate space is available for Red Deer’s vulnerable population to safely isolate in cases of positive test results, close contact identification or if exhibiting symptoms.
At this time, provincial health restrictions remain in place with indoor social gatherings prohibited, and outdoor social gatherings limited to 10 people with a 2 metre physical distancing between households.
