Water intake areas are dangerous and are not safe places to stop, climb, swim or sunbathe. Keep a safe distance from intake structures and follow all posted warnings while using the river.

If you see someone struggling in the water, act quickly but safely. Do not put yourself at risk.

• Call 9-1-1 immediately
• Shout for help to alert others nearby
• Reach or throw an object (such as a rope, paddle or flotation device) if it is safe to do so
• Do not enter the water unless you are trained in water rescue
• Stay nearby and reassure the person until emergency services arrive

River conditions can change quickly, and hazards may not always be visible from the surface. Always be aware of your surroundings and watch for the following risks:

• Fast-moving water
• Cold water
• Changing water levels and flow rates
• Rocks, logs, debris and underwater hazards
• Bridge pillars
• Intake structures and other infrastructure

Before you launch your vessel, check the following:

• Check river conditions and flow rates
• Check the weather forecast and be aware of changing conditions
• Know your route, including your launch point and take-out point
• Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return
• Arrange transportation from your take-out point
• Avoid alcohol or drugs on the river

Bring the right equipment to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience on the river:

• Properly fitting life jacket or personal flotation device for each person
• Watercraft appropriate for river use
• Paddle
• Rope
• Whistle
• Bailing bucket or safety kit
• Cell phone in a waterproof case
• Drinking water
• Sunscreen and a hat

Help protect the river and surrounding environment for everyone to enjoy:

• Use designated launch areas
• Do not litter
• Protect habitat and wildlife
• Avoid damaging riverbanks
• Use washrooms and garbage bins where available
