The City received $122,600 in grant funding from the Government of Alberta through the Municipal Climate Change Action Centre to retrofit LED lights in place of fluorescent bulbs in several facilities. This funding allowed for approximately 800 LED fixtures be installed between five Civic Yards facilities, three parking lots and City Hall.

LED lights provide both energy and cost savings, they last longer and are a better quality of light with less flickering and better colour than fluorescent bulbs. These lights are also safer and more environmentally friendly to dispose of.

“This grant not only enabled us to upgrade fixtures across multiple facilities, but it also advances our commitment to environmental stewardship and operational sustainability,” said Curtis Martinek, Facilities & Asset Management Superintendent. “Changing out the fluorescent bulbs for more energy efficient LED lights is in alignment with The City’s Environmental Master Plan. One of the six focus areas in the plan is Energy; the goal is to reduce energy use and move towards using renewable energy resources.”

This project provides anticipated yearly electricity savings of more than 300,000 kWh, which means a reduction of approximately 160 tonnes of greenhouse gases. Overall, The City will save more than $50,000 a year in energy costs.

The Municipal Climate Change Action Centre is a partnership of Alberta Municipalities, the Rural Municipalities of Alberta, and the Government of Alberta. Funding for the Community Energy Conservation Program was provided by the Government of Alberta.
