Red Deer RCMP charge male after altercation involving weapons

Red Deer, Alta. – Red Deer RCMP have charged a male after an altercation involving weapons.

On March 2, 2026, at 11:42 p.m., Red Deer RCMP responded to a 911 call reporting a male had attacked several people with weapons, in the area of 50 St. and 50 Ave. in Red Deer, Alta.

When police arrived, witnesses advised that a male suspect had struck three individuals on their heads and backs with a cane and threatened another person with a knife before fleeing the area on foot. The victims sustained minor injuries and declined medical assistance.

Police quickly located the male suspect who then waved the knife towards police. The male was taken into custody without incident.

As a result of the police investigation, Velizar Zonjic (61), a resident of Red Deer, has been charged with the following:

  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose (x2)
  • Assault with a weapon (x4)
  • Resisting or obstructing peace officer

Zonjic was held for a Judicial Interim Release (JIR) Hearing and was remanded into custody. Zonjic was scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer on March 4, 2026.
