Red Deer, Alta. – In the early morning hours of Oct. 2, 2025, at approximately 1:15 a.m., a Red Deer RCMP General Duty member was conducting proactive patrols in the area of Gaetz Ave and 28 Street when he observed a suspicious person and vehicle in a parking lot.
RCMP noted what appeared to be a male driver slumped over in the drivers seat of vehicle, which was parked diagonally across several parking spots in a lot. Upon getting closer, the vehicle drove away but was soon stopped by police.
RCMP identified the male driver and lone occupant, who was found to have outstanding warrants from previous charges. While speaking to the driver, police observed an open bag in the vehicle containing what appeared to be illicit drugs. Upon arresting the male, a search led police to the seizure of 555g methamphetamine, a weigh scale, plastic baggies, and other drug paraphernalia.
Derrick Smith, a 43-year-old resident of Penhold, has been charged with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking a Controlled Substance and Fail to Comply with Undertaking.
Following a Judicial Interim Release Hearing, Smith was released with conditions to appear at the Alberta Court of Justice in Red Deer on Oct. 23, 2025.
