Red Deer RCMP reminds families to put safety first this Family Day

February 13, 2026 9:52 AM

Red Deer, Alta. – With Family Day approaching, many residents will be heading outdoors to enjoy winter recreation and time together. Whether plans include skating, sledding, trail activities, or travel, the Red Deer RCMP is encouraging families to take a few extra precautions to help ensure a safe and enjoyable long weekend. Preparing ahead and staying aware of conditions can help prevent injuries and emergencies during Family Day outings.

The Red Deer RCMP offers the following safety reminders for families planning winter activities:

  • Wear layered, weather-appropriate clothing that protects against cold and moisture, including warm hats, gloves, and sturdy winter footwear.
  • Helmets should be worn for activities such as skating, sledding, skiing, or snowboarding to reduce the risk of head injuries.
  • Before going onto frozen lakes or ponds, confirm ice thickness and avoid areas with moving water, visible cracks, or changing conditions.
  • Check weather and trail conditions in advance, and postpone activities if extreme cold, storms, or poor visibility are forecast. In mountain regions, review avalanche advisories and avoid hazardous terrain.
  • Bring a reliable means of communication, such as a fully charged mobile phone or GPS device.
  • When using ATVs, carry a winter emergency kit that includes first aid supplies, basic tools, a tow strap, spare fuel, and a thermal blanket.
  • Stay on designated trails and follow local rules for hiking, skiing, or operating recreational vehicles.
  • With limited daylight hours, wear reflective clothing and carry a flashlight or headlamp if activities extend into the evening.
  • Secure personal items and lock vehicles when parked, ensuring valuables are kept out of sight.
  • Supervise children closely in crowded or open areas and establish a meeting point in case someone becomes separated.
  • If traveling for Family Day plans, make sure your vehicle is equipped for winter driving, allow extra travel time, and adjust driving to road conditions.

Let’s all do our part to make Family Day safe and enjoyable for everyone. Play safe. Drive Safe. Be responsible.
