Red Deer, Alta. – The Red Deer RCMP’s Crime Reduction Team (CRT) has had a great deal of success recently using their PINPOINT policing approach. PINPOINT is a proactive, strategic policing method that reduces the negative impact of repeat offenders by using crime data analysis to map crime hotspots and identify target areas.
In the past month, members with CRT have conducted focused patrols in these crime hotspots that have resulted in a number of arrests, criminal charges and recovery of stolen property. Since the beginning of April, eight PINPOINT Persons of Interest were arrested for weapons charges, flight from police, driving while suspended, failing to comply with release orders, theft and other outstanding warrants.
During a patrol of a PINPOINT address, CRT Members identified a stolen vehicle, which then fled from a marked police vehicle. Members were able to locate the suspect vehicle and arrested the driver without incident.
“PINPOINT has proven a very effective tool for us,” says Insp. Holly Glassford, acting Officer in Charge for the Red Deer RCMP. “The data-driven approach helps us identify the problematic addresses, people and behaviours that most affect community safety in Red Deer.”
While PINPOINT has had a positive impact on crime reduction, observant and concerned citizens play a big role in crime prevention as well. “When the neighbourhood is vigilant in watching for and reporting suspicious behaviours, the RCMP has better information on where crime is occurring,” says Insp. Glassford.
