The Vehicle for Hire Bylaw governs any vehicle for hire, which includes Taxi, Transportation Network (ride share) Companies (TNC), Limousines, Shuttle and Designated Driver Services.
The Vehicle for Hire Bylaw was designed to increase safety for both drivers and passengers. Under the bylaw, if you are transporting at least one passenger for compensation from any place within the city of Red Deer, licences are required.
- Driver for Hire Licences are required by Taxi, Limousine, Designated, Shuttle and Transportation Network (ride share) Drivers, and any other Driver transporting at least one passenger for compensation. Drivers must be affiliated with an approved Brokerage.
- Brokerage Licences are required for Taxi, Limousine, Transportation Network (ride share) companies, Shuttle and Designated Driver operations and any other company that administers the transportation of passengers within the city of Red Deer.
2025 Taxi Plate Draw
A taxi plate draw was held on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, to award 26 new taxi plates for use in Red Deer.
Red Deer's Vehicle for Hire Bylaw, adopted on May 27, 2024, requires The City to issue 15 taxi plates per year for three consecutive years. In 2027, the plate cap will be removed which will allow The City to issue taxi and accessible plates to eligible applicants upon request.
Of the 15 plates awarded in 2024, 11 plates were returned to The City. These were added to the 15 plates available in 2025, bringing the total to 26 plates. These plates were awarded by random draw on Wednesday, June 4, 2025.
