About Greater Downtown

Greater Downtown is the umbrella description for Red Deer’s central area. It includes Historic Downtown, Capstone, Railyards and Parkvale - four connected neighbourhoods that together support city life, business, culture, entertainment, housing, public space and investment.

Since 1983, downtown governance has included a Business Improvement Area. As that model comes to an end, Red Deer has an opportunity to support downtown in a broader way — one that reflects how people live, move, gather, do business, and build community across all four Greater Downtown neighbourhoods.

The City of Red Deer is committed to supporting all areas of Greater Downtown and to working with businesses, residents, property owners, event organizers, community partners, and visitors on future governance, programs, and services.

The four neighbourhoods

  • Historic Downtown is the traditional commercial and civic heart of Greater Downtown.
  • Capstone is an emerging mixed-use urban neighbourhood beside the downtown core and Red Deer River.
  • Railyards is a district of connection, transition and future opportunity within the central area.
  • Parkvale is a mature residential neighbourhood that adds established character, heritage value and housing choice to Greater Downtown.

What guides Greater Downtown work

Current downtown work builds on existing City planning and identity work. The provides long-term planning direction, while the support a recognizable downtown identity shaped by community input.
