RARB Board Member Information

The Central Alberta Regional Assessment Review Board is an impartial, independent board responsible for issuing evidence-based decisions on complaints relative to property assessments.

We will be accepting applications for new Board Members to serve a three-year term soon.

Who we’re looking for:

  • Individuals with an interest in property assessment, real estate, governance, or decision-making processes.
  • No formal training is required to apply. Mandatory training is provided by the Province of Alberta before the start of the term.
  • Flexible daytime availability is essential to attend hearings and training, often scheduled Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

How to Apply

Central Alberta Regional Assessment Review Board Members (RARB) are appointed annually for three year terms. Applications are reviewed and approved by the end of December for the following year. At this time applications are now closed and will re-open mid-August. 

Apply if you have experience with:

  • Property Management,
  • Property Development
  • Assessment
  • Law
  • Real Estate
  • Administrative Boards or Tribunals considered an asset 

Applicants should: 

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have a flexible schedule during regular business hours
  • Have strong analytical skills
  • Have professional or legal writing abilities
  • computer skills

About the Board

The Central Alberta Regional Assessment Review Board (RARB) is an independent regional board that supports more than 30 partner municipalities. Board Members of the RARB are not employees of any Partner Municipality, but will receive paid remuneration for the work they do. Those interested in applying do not need formal training to apply but should have an interest in property assessment.

Training

  • Attend required ARB Member Certification Training, held online with the Land and Property Rights Tribunal (3 days).
  • Available to attend professional development and required training as scheduled. 

Commitment 

  • Ability to travel, we are Regional ARB, therefore hearings may be scheduled in any one of our Partner Municipalities.
  • Available for hearing assignments generally Monday to Friday from May through December. 
  • Panel Assignments will vary from one half day to five consecutive days per week OR with no scheduled assignments. 

Competencies

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with a wide range of demographics.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, professionalism and uphold the rules of natural justice.
  • Ability to manage sensitive information and maintain confidentiality.
  • Experience on quasi-judicial boards or administrative tribunals is not required but is considered an asset.

Additional Information

  • Hearings may take place in-person or online using Zoom. 
  • Hearings typically occur during business hours of Monday to Friday.
  • Volume of hearings will vary each year. 
  • Last minute withdrawals are common.
  • Board Members are not guaranteed any number of scheduled hearings.
