Following a Public Hearing and an in-depth review process, City Council passed a resolution approving the transition of The City’s Electric Utility to a Municipally Controlled Corporation (MCC).
This marks the final step in a multi-year review, which explored how to best position the Electric Utility for long-term success.
“Today’s decision reflects our commitment to doing what’s right for our community – both now and into the future,” said Mayor Ken Johnston. “We know the energy landscape is evolving, and this new model will give us the tools to be more responsive, efficient more sustainable while continuing to deliver reliable electricity to Red Deerians. Getting to this point has taken tremendous effort, diligence and focus for both Council and Administration, and I look forward to seeing this new chapter take shape.”
An MCC will strengthen long-term financial and operational sustainability, improve the ability to respond to changes in the energy sector, and provide clearer accountability through a formal structure that includes an independent board of directors.

The City will begin implementation planning in the months ahead, including the development of the MCC’s governance framework and transition details. The Electric Utility will continue to operate under its current structure until the transition is complete.
