Greater Downtown

Greater Downtown is the connected heart of Red Deer. It brings together Historic Downtown, Capstone, Railyards and Parkvale - four neighbourhoods with different character, shared opportunity, and a common future.

Whether you are here to live, work, visit, host an event, open a business, or learn what is changing, this is your starting point for information about downtown services, events, governance updates, business resources, and opportunities to get involved.

What’s happening

City support continues through the Downtown governance changes. As the downtown Business Improvement Area moves through the disestablishment process, The City of Red Deer continues essential services, support for downtown public spaces and support for downtown events during the transition.

Council has also approved a downtown-focused Committee of Council to help guide future governance discussions and provide advice on downtown businesses, public spaces, events, and long-term revitalization.

Ross Street Patio – Spring Update

With spring finally arriving, work is underway to get the Ross Street Patio ready for another season.

Starting early May:

  • The patio will be swept, pressure washed and deep cleaned, and the murals will receive a fresh touch-up to help beautify the space.
  • Patio tables and umbrellas will be set up the week of May 11–15, ahead of the long weekend.

This summer, the Red Deer Arts Council will deliver a full season of programming from May 19 – September 30. Designed to coincide with after-work pedestrian traffic and free downtown parking starting at 4:30 p.m., the season will feature 62 booked artist performances and 19 Open Mic nights, totalling 81 activations throughout the summer.

Programming kicks off after the May long weekend with a consistent weekly schedule including live music on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays (4:30–6:30 p.m.), Open Mic Night on Thursdays (5-9 p.m.), along with special events for Canada Day and Westerner Days Parade.

It's going to be another great summer on the patio!

Community Policing - Spring Update

Community Peace Officers will transition to summer hours from May to September, with coverage extended from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

As we move into the summer months and daylight hours increase, this adjustment allows better alignment of resources with community activity patterns. With more people utilizing parks, open spaces, downtown, and other public areas earlier in the day and later into the evening, these extended hours will enhance the ability to proactively address concerns, maintain visibility, and support community safety throughout the day.
