National Seniors Day

Each year on October 1, Canada recognizes National Seniors Day, an opportunity to celebrate older adults and recognize the many ways they contribute to families, workplaces and communities.

Older adults contribute to our communities in many ways. They are neighbours, employees, volunteers, mentors, caregivers, leaders and community builders.

Their knowledge, experience and contributions help shape strong, connected communities.

National Seniors Day is also an opportunity to consider what it means to build a community where people can continue to participate, access services, stay connected and feel valued throughout their lives.

In Red Deer, many parts of community life can influence the experiences of older adults, including:

  • accessible public spaces and facilities
  • recreation and leisure opportunities
  • transportation
  • housing
  • community programs and services
  • opportunities to volunteer and participate
  • social connection and belonging
