Amenities & Maintenance

Keeping our park spaces beautiful, enjoyable and safe remains our top priority. Whether collecting garbage, weeding out noxious plants, or keeping pesky critters at bay, you’ll see our crews out keeping our spaces beautiful. Check out the list below for answers to questions you may have in several categories.

Garbage

Crews will continue to collect garbage, especially in high-use areas. While low-traffic areas may see a reduced pick-up schedule, you can help us empty bins that are getting full by reporting through Report a Problem [link].

Help us keep Red Deer clean by leaving spaces better than you found it. If you see litter in our parks, on trails, or around your neighbourhood, kindly pick it up to dispose of it properly.

Why is garbage not being collected as often in some places?

We're still actively managing waste in high-traffic and high-use areas. Collection may be reduced in parks or trails where bins don't fill up regularly. If you notice an overflowing bin, you can request service through Report a Problem.

Are garbage cans being removed from public spaces?

There are no plans to remove garbage cans. However, if there are logical places that are over-populated with cans, we may decide to remove extras.

Do sports groups need to take their own garbage?

No, however if cans are getting full, we ask you to help us out by reporting it to us so we can empty them.

Trails & Playgrounds

We continue to care for and maintain our beloved Waskasoo park system. While we are still actively inspecting and maintaining park and trail infrastructure, it may take us longer to get to these spaces, and you may notice less debris clearing and slower response times for pruning, maintenance and repairs in some areas. If you spot damage, graffiti or hazards, please report them through Report a Problem. Along trails and in playgrounds, there will be no trimming around infrastructure such as benches, fences, fire hydrants, street signs and boulevards.

Washrooms

The McKenzie Trails north washroom has been closed as part of cost-saving measures. This decision was made based on usage data and maintenance costs. Other public washrooms remain open in key locations.

Spray Parks

To reduce costs, hours at the two spray parks and public fountain are being adjusted. The hours of operation for the Woody’s Spray Park and the Central Spray and Play are now 12 to 7 p.m., daily. The fountain in Capstone operates 12 p.m. to 10 p.m., daily.

Downtown

Hanging baskets, Capstone planters, seasonal pole decorations, and decorative downtown elements are not being installed this year, resulting in a $100,000 reduction in budget.
