Red Deer RCMP remind drivers of icy intersections

January 16, 2026 8:35 AM

Red Deer, Alta. – Red Deer RCMP Traffic Section is reminding drivers to slow down and exercise caution at roadway intersections. With the warmer daytime climate, snow is melting during the day and freezing into the night, causing icy road conditions. Intersections are particularly a hazard as traction is reduced and the possibility of collisions increase.

Sgt. Brian Herrick of the Red Deer RCMP Traffic Section says “the risk of intersection collisions increases when pedestrians, motorists, and cyclists converge. Drivers should be aware of the risks, watch their speed, make proper left turns. Be sure to fully stop at stop signs and obey all traffic signals.”

Red Deer RCMP remind drivers of the following traffic safety tips:

  • When approaching an intersection, begin to slow down earlier than usual
  • Be aware of traffic around you, and other drivers that may have difficulty stopping
  • Avoid distractions
  • Scan the intersection for pedestrians, bikes, and other vehicles
  • Ensure visibility – clean windshield, free of snow/ice
  • Be cautious of sun glare
  • Be mindful of emergency vehicles
  • Familiarize yourself with your route ahead of time, this helps avoid last-minute lane changes
  • Slow down!

Red Deer RCMP Traffic Section is committed to the vision of safer roadways with no fatal or serious injury collisions. Intersection safety is an essential step in putting this vision into action.
