Highway 2A & Township Road 391 Roundabout

A new roundabout at Highway 2A and Township Road 391 is being constructed to improve traffic flow, safety, and long-term transportation capacity in the area.
Highway 2A & Township Road 391 Roundabout

The project is being completed with funding support primarily from the Government of Alberta.

Why is a roundabout being considered for this location?

The Highway 2A and Township Road 391 intersection serves industrial, commercial, commuter, and regional traffic. As the area continues to develop and traffic volumes increase, improvements are needed to support safe and efficient travel.

Roundabouts are widely used to improve:

  • Traffic flow
  • Safety
  • Traffic capacity
  • Long-term transportation efficiency
What phase is the project currently in?

The project is currently in Phase 1: Project Charter and Preliminary Investigations.

This phase includes:

  • Surveying
  • Geotechnical investigations
  • Utility locating
  • Technical studies
  • Preliminary planning activities

The information collected during this phase will help inform future design work.

What work will residents and businesses see in 2026?

Residents and business owners may notice field crews working in and around the Chiles Industrial area through approximately November 30.

Activities may include:

  • Land surveying
  • Utility locating
  • Geotechnical drilling
  • Site investigations
  • Environmental and technical assessments

These activities are necessary to gather information required for engineering and design.

Who will be conducting the field work?

The City of Red Deer has retained CIMA+ to complete survey and geotechnical investigations as part of the project.

Personnel may be working on road rights-of-way and other locations within the study area.

All crew members will carry appropriate identification and wear high-visibility safety clothing.

Why am I seeing workers near my property or business?

Field crews are collecting information about existing ground conditions, utilities, roadways, and surrounding infrastructure.

Their work helps engineers better understand site conditions and supports future project design.

Will crews need access to private property?

In some locations, project representatives may require access to lands adjacent to the project area to complete surveys or technical investigations.

Where access is required, representatives will identify themselves and take reasonable steps to minimize disruption.

Will this work affect traffic?

Although motorists may see work happening, traffic impacts are not expected. As always, motorists are encouraged to:

  • Follow all posted signage
  • Obey reduced speed limits where applicable
  • Watch for workers and equipment
  • Allow extra travel time when necessary
Will this work affect my business?

At this stage, significant impacts to business access are not anticipated.

The City recognizes the importance of maintaining access for customers, employees, deliveries, and service providers and will continue to communicate project updates as planning progresses.

Why did I receive a notification letter?

You may have received a notification letter because:

  • Your property is located near the project area;
  • You own or operate a business that may be affected by future project activities; or
  • You may have an interest in the project and upcoming field investigations.

The purpose of this notification is to provide advance awareness of project activities occurring in the area.

What happens next?

The project will be completed in three phases:

Phase 1 (2026): Project Charter and Preliminary Investigations

  • Surveying
  • Utility locating
  • Geotechnical investigations

Phase 2 (2027): Design and Traffic Impact Assessment

  • Traffic studies
  • Engineering design

Phase 3 (2028): Construction

  • Construction of the roundabout and associated roadway improvements

Project timelines are subject to change as planning progresses.

How can I stay informed?

The project webpage will be the primary source of information throughout the project.
